Google also reports that current users may continue to use the Google Drive app, but the software will no longer be supported from December 11th, 2017 and will be shut down completely on March 12th, 2018.
At the moment, It is not really clear to know if Google will block communication of Google Drive clients from its cloud storage or just remove remove the client-side application from its Web services.
With this launch, Google Drive for Mac/PC is officially deprecated. It will no longer be supported starting on December 11th, 2017, and it will shut down completely on March 12th, 2018.
The Google Drive client will notify users starting in October to inform them on the new development. However, users of the Google's new programs such as Drive File Stream and Backup and Sync, are already being informed to stop using Backup and Sync to save disk space.
The company wants users to use newer programs instead which it revealed some time ago and yesterday.
Regular users are already prompted to use Google Backup and Sync, a new app that combines the core functionality of Google Drive and Google Photos. The app is currently available for Windows and Mac operating systems, and supports the syncing of any folder and files you pick with Google's cloud storage.
Users of Google Apps may use Drive File Stream instead which will become available generally for all on September 26th, 2017.
